What Was Learned with the Teton Dam Failure
Speaker: Brent Carter – Retired Columbia Pacific NW Regional Geologist: Bureau of Reclamation Date: March 31, 2020 Time: 3-4 PM (reception to follow) Location: Boise State University – RUCH 103 (1375 University Drive) Summary: In Eastern Idaho, the Teton Dam was constructed by the Bureau of Reclamation. On June 5, 1976 when the dam was filling for the first time it suffered a catastrophic failure. The Teton Dam had immediate regional effects, but also provided valuable insight on how to better design and construct dams. Brent will discuss this event and important lessons learned. |

6-8 PM Riverside Hotel, Boise, ID Sponsored by CGS Mule and Haley & Aldrich SUMMARY: An overview of current geologic mapping by the Idaho Geological Survey in areas of interest to mineral exploration companies and oil and gas companies. Discussion will include the Salmon area (Cu-Co plus Au), the Stibnite and Elk City areas (Au), and the SW Idaho oil and gas play.
BIO: Reed Lewis is a Full Research Geologist with the Idaho Geological Survey. His role includes public outreach and student advising, with a primary focus on regional geology and production of 1:24,000 and 1:100,000 scale geologic maps of the state. Reed supervises six summer employees who conduct geologic mapping and one full-time database manager who provides web delivery of unpublished mine records. Reed’s most recent research emphasis is on the stratigraphy, structure, and geochronology of the Belt Supergroup and basement rocks below the Belt; stratigraphy and geochronology of Neoproterozoic and Paleozoic rocks in central Idaho; and stratigraphy and structure of Tertiary sediments in southwest Idaho. |
